Echoes of the Unseen: A conversation on images, memory, and the future of listening

As part of our exhibition All Spaces Are Different we warmly invite you to the discussion event Echoes of the Unseen on June 22, 2025. The exhibition features works by Nezaket Ekici, Abrie Fourie, and Akinbode Akinbiyi, created during our 2021 Artist-in-Residence program in Burkina Faso. Reframed within the urban context of Cologne, the exhibition opens up a space to engage with global entanglements, postcolonial continuities, and questions of local visibility. Photographs, video works, installations, performances, and conversations invite visitors to explore urban memory, resistance, and transcultural artistic practices from multiple perspectives. The discussion Echoes of the Unseen places a central question at the heart of the event:

How can artistic practice help us hear what has been overlooked or silenced? In conversation with Prof. donna Kukama, Abrie Fourie, and Akinbode Akinbiyi, moderated by Sam Hopkins (KHM Cologne), the event explores the sonic landscapes of cities, photography as archive and political gesture, and the unresolved visions of revolutionary movements—particularly in relation to the legacy of Thomas Sankara.

Echoes of the Unseen is an invitation to listen—beyond the obvious, beyond the surface of the visible. It is an attempt to experiment with new forms of remembrance and storytelling, and to collectively imagine spaces of dignity, participation, and transformation.
