Our Cooperation partner: Radio AWU
As part of this year’s Artist-in-Residence Program, we are pleased to introduce Radio AWU (Senegal) as one of our cooperation partners. This collaboration plays a central role in our efforts to use art as a catalyst for societal discussions and change. This year, our residency program particularly focuses on the active involvement of the local community in the project. Together with our partner organizations Centre de Développement Chorégraphique La Termitière, Radio AWU, and Fasocheck Association, we have developed an interactive workshop program that addresses important societal topics such as media literacy, women’s rights, and intercultural dialogue.
A key element of the cooperation with Radio AWU is the promotion of gender equality. Despite the progressive legal framework that Burkina Faso offers in terms of equality and the protection of women’s rights – such as the prohibition of genital mutilation and the marriage of minors – the reality on the ground presents a different picture. Particularly in rural areas, women and girls continue to be affected by gender-based violence and are subject to structural discrimination. Access to education remains out of reach for many, and their participation in political and social decision-making processes is often denied. Radio AWU will play a central role in integrating women into the project, offering reading sessions of Afro-feminist literature at the Opera Village. These sessions provide a space to reflect on current societal issues, broaden perspectives, and highlight the relevance of women’s rights. Additionally, participants will receive an introduction to podcast production, allowing them to share their own experiences and viewpoints, and connect with other women. These workshops offer a valuable platform to amplify women’s voices and encourage their active participation in social dialogue.
Through close collaboration with Radio AWU and the other partner organizations, we are combining art with social responsibility. The artists will be involved in the design and implementation of the workshops to develop creative approaches that address topics such as gender equality and intercultural dialogue. In this way, art becomes an instrument that not only inspires but also actively contributes to change, extending its impact beyond the borders of Burkina Faso.
