As part of our 2024 Artist-in-Residence program, we are thrilled to welcome the talented artist Godelive Kasangati Kabena from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Under the theme “Art as Participation in Social Discourse,” this year we are placing a special focus on the active involvement of the local community, and we are excited to have Godelive with us!
Godelive Kasangati Kabena lives and works between Kinshasa and Kumasi, where she is studying at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Her artistic practice is based on speculative research and addresses themes such as the body, reproduction, and equality. Her works open new perspectives, engaging with both posthumanist questions and social discourses. In recent years, her works have been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including at the Amasaka Gallery in Uganda, the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, and the 12th edition of the Bamako Encounters in Mali. Her works are also held in prestigious art institutions such as Mitchell-Innes in New York and the Kamel Lazaar Foundation in Tunis.
During her stay at Opera Village, Godelive will work alongside other artists and local partner organizations, such as the Centre de Développement Chorégraphique La Termitière and the Fasocheck Association, to lead interactive workshops on topics such as media literacy, gender equality, and intercultural dialogue. These workshops will provide the local community with the opportunity to experience art as a tool for social change and gain new perspectives. We are excited to welcome Godelive Kasangati Kabena to Opera Village this year and look forward to the creative insights she will bring to our community.
